Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal reports that NFLย commissioner Roger Goodell was paid $35.1 million in salary and anotherย $9.1ย million inย deferred pay from 2012 in the last 12 months.
- Kaplanย adds thatย Goodell’sย salary the year before that wasย $29.5 millionย salary.
According to Kalpan,ย Goodell is likely theย highest paid sports executive in the United States and should top or at least come close to MLB commissionerย Bud Selig.
NFL team owners who spoke with Kaplan indicated that Goodell’s “true pay” for this period of time wasย around $35 million.
โGoodellโs compensation reflects our pay-for-performance philosophy and is appropriate given the fact that the NFL under his consistently strong leadership continues to grow,โ NFL ownersย Arthur Blank,ย Robert Kraftย andย Jerry Richardsonย wrote in a letter to their fellow owners that is scheduled to be e-mailed friday afternoon.
Kalpanย also mentions that formerย NFL Media executive Steve Bornstein earnedย $26.1 million during the same period of time as $19.6 million of which came from the appreciation value of the NFL Network.
