Ravens backup QB Robert Griffin III said during a podcast recently on the team’s official website that the Jaguars attempted to trade for him twice last year.
“Jacksonville tried to trade for me at the end of the preseason and right before the trade deadline, so we knew that was an opportunity and there’d be a chance if things didn’t work out with Nick Foles,” Griffin said, via CBSSports.com.
Reports had said that RGIII was generating from trade interest after putting together a solid preseason. However, the Ravens elected to hold on to him and he finished out the year in Baltimore before becoming an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
It was clear for months that the Jaguars were going to sign Nick Foles, so Griffin was likely a Plan B option at best for them.
Griffin, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Redskins back in 2012. He spent four years in Washington before signing a two-year, $15 million contract that includes $6.75 million guaranteed with the Browns back in 2016.
RGIII was set to make a base salary of $6 million for the 2017 season when the Browns released him. He signed with Baltimore to a one-year, $1 million deal in 2018 and returned to the team a few weeks ago on another one-year contract worth $4.5 million.
In 2018, Griffin appeared in three games for the Ravens. He completed two of six passes for 21 yards in limited action, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He did not have any rushing attempts.
