Romeo Crennel Won’t Return As Texans DC In 2020

According to Tom Pelissero, Texans DC Romeo Crennel will not return in the same role for Houston in 2020.

Crennel’s contract ended this season and the long-time veteran coach is pondering either retiring or returning as a senior assistant.

Per Adam Schefter, current Texans DL coach Anthony Weaver has been promoted to take Crennel’s place.

Crennel, 72, began his NFL coaching career with the Giants back in 1981 as their special teams coach. He later took jobs with the Patriots, Jets and Brown before returning to New England in 2001 as their defensive coordinator.

After four seasons with the Patriots, Crennel was hired as the Browns’ head coach. Unfortunately, he was later fired after four years with the team.

Crennel spent a few years with the Chiefs as their defensive coordinator and interim head coach before the Texans hired as their defensive coordinator in 2014. Houston made the decision to promote Mike Vrabel in 2017 before moving Crennel back to coordinator in 2018.

In 2019, the Texans’ defense ranked No. 13 best in total yards allowed, No. 14 in points allowed, No. 9 in rushing yards allowed and No. 15 in passing yards allowed.
