Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Saints are close to finalizing a new contract with QB Drew Brees that could be completed as soon as tomorrow.
This has been the clear expectation all along and shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
Brees made it clear that he would only play for the Saints once he decided to return for the 2020 season.
Earlier in the day, the Saints used a first-round restricted tender on QB Tayson Hill and a report said that they hadn’t closed the door on a potential deal for Teddy Bridgewater.
Either way, it’s clear Brees will be the team’s starting quarterback this season.
It’s worth mentioning that the Saints need to get a deal done with Brees before Wednesday or they would take a cap hit from his last contract.
Brees, 41, is a former second-round pick of the Chargers back in 2001. After five years with the Chargers, Brees signed on with the Saints as a free agent in 2006.
Brees has spent the past 12 seasons in New Orleans and played out the final year of his two-year, $50 million contract.
In 2019, Brees appeared in 11 games for the Saints and completed 74.3 percent of his passes for 2,979 yards, 27 touchdowns and four interceptions.
