According to Ian Rapoport, the Saints have exercised the fifth-year option for DT Sheldon Rankins on Wednesday.
Rankins had been playing well before a torn Achilles in the playoffs ended his season, so this move gives him a little extra security with the Saints.
It’s worth mentioning the fifth-year option is guaranteed for injury only until the first day of the 2020 league year. It also won’t prevent the two parties from working on an extension in the next year or so.
Rankins, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Saints back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $12.8 million contract and will make a base salary of $2.19 million for the 2019 season.
In 2018, Rankins appeared in all 16 games for the Saints and recorded 40 tackles, eight sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defense.
