Saints Exercise DT Sheldon Rankinsโ€™ Fifth-Year Option

According to Ian Rapoport, the Saints have exercised the fifth-year option for DT Sheldon Rankins on Wednesday.

Rankins had been playing well before a torn Achilles in the playoffs ended his season, so this move gives him a little extra security with the Saints.

Itโ€™s worth mentioning the fifth-year option is guaranteed for injury only until the first day of the 2020 league year. It also wonโ€™t prevent the two parties from working on an extension in the next year or so.

Rankins, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Saints back in 2016. Heโ€™s entering the final year of his four-year, $12.8 million contract and will make a base salary of $2.19 million for the 2019 season.

In 2018, Rankins appeared in all 16 games for the Saints and recorded 40 tackles, eight sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defense.
