Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network mentions that Saints RB Mark Ingram is expected to reach the open market as an unrestricted free agent next year.
A scout who spoke to Rapoport pointed to Ingram “running with confidence” this season and the Saints’ inside/outside zone scheme, which he believe fits Ingram’s strengths as a running back.
Ingram, 24, is coming off of an impressive Week 8 performance against the Packers in which he ran for 172 yards on 24 carries (7.16 YPC) and a touchdown. On the season, Ingram has recorded 331 yards rushing on 58 carries (5.7 YPC) and four touchdowns.
He’s in the final year of his rookie contract after the Saints elected to not pick up his fifth-year option a few months back. Ingram is really capitalizing on his opportunities as he prepares for free agency.
As things stand right now, Ingram joins a decent group of running back free agents that include: C.J. Spiller, DeMarco Murray, Ahmad Bradshaw, Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley, Ryan Mathews, and Frank Gore.
