Sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter thatย Eagles QB Sam Bradford isย not happy with the news that Philadelphia has traded up to No. 2 overall and plans to take a quarterback.
“Heโs hot,โ one source tells Schefter. โWho wouldnโt be? This is Philly saying, โWe donโt see (you) as long-term answer.โ Heโs mad and wants to show everyone whoโs best.โโ
Fair enough.
While Bradford may not be happy about the situation,ย Eagles GM Howie Roseman confirmed thatย Bradford will be their starting quarterback this season and added that they have no plans to make him available for trade, even though they will be taking a quarterback at No. 2 overall.
Many were wondering if the Eagles could make Bradford available for trade, seeing as the Broncos and Jets are both in the market for starting quarterbacks.ย However, there are obvious obstacles to trading Bradford at this point.
Joel Corry points out thatย trading Bradford before June 2 would leave them with an $11ย millionย 2016 salary cap charge because of his signing bonus. If they wanted until after June 1, these figures would improve to $5.5 million (2016)ย andย $5.5 million (2017) in the dead money.
Albert Breer adds thatย the second year of Bradford’s contract looks smart now, as it puts the Eagles in position to trade him after the 2016 season if their young quarterbackย is ready toย take over.
Bradford, 28, signed a two-year, $36 million contractย that includedย $26 million guaranteed with the Eagles over a month ago. He stands to make base salaries ofย $7 million and $13 million over the next two years.
According to OverTheCap.com, trading would free up just $1.5 million in available cap space while creating a staggering $11 million in dead money.
In 2015,ย Bradford appeared in 14 games for the Eagles and threw for 3,725 yards while completing 65 percent of his passes to go along with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
