The Seattle Seahawks didn’t go through the draft without addressing their pass rush this week, trading up to draft DE Darrell Taylor in the second round and adding DE Alton Robinson in the fifth.
However, Seahawks HC Pete Carroll said the team is still in touch with DE Jadeveon Clowney and the opportunity for him to return to Seattle is still in play.
โJust staying in touch with him, heโs kind of patient with the time frames that are out there and all that,โ Carroll said via USA Today’s Liz Mathews. โBut he knows that the Seahawks are a place that he had some success and that he had a really good time and he contributed to our club and all of that. Thatโs a pretty good feeling for him being out there still. John will take care of it. If thereโs an opportunity that makes sense, weโll dive back in and pursue it.โ
Despite also signing Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa in free agency, Seahawks GM John Schneider said last week the door is still not closed on Clowney potentially coming back.
However, NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo had previously said the chances of Clowney playing in Seattle in 2020 were “slim to none” unless he dramatically lowered his asking price.
The market for Clowney has been hard to gauge in recent weeks. The Browns have reportedly shown some interest in him along with the Titans.
Clowney was looking for around $20 million per year this offseason, but ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported his asking price has moved closer to $17-$18 million a year.
Clowney, 27, is a former No. 1 overall pick of the Texans back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $22.272 million contract when the Texans picked up his fifth-year option which paid him $12.306 million for the 2018 season.
Houston franchised Clowney last year before trading him to the Seahawks at the start of the regular season.
In 2019, Clowney appeared in 13 games for the Seahawks and recorded 31 tackles, three sacks, an interception, two defensive touchdowns, four forced fumbles, two recoveries and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2o edge rusher out of 108 qualifying players.
