Steelers Officially Promote Randy Fichtner To Offensive Coordinator

Update:

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Thursday that they’ve officially promoted QBs coach Randy Fichtner to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.

I want to thank Coach (Mike) Tomlin and Art Rooney II for giving me this opportunity to be the offensive coordinator for this organization,” said Fichtner. “We have a tremendous roster, and it will be my charge to continue putting our offensive players in position to succeed and score points. We have the nucleus to be successful, and I am thrilled about the chance to lead the offense as we have already started preparing for the 2018 season.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Steelers will allow offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who is currently a free agent, to move on and sign with another team.

Rapoport also confirmed that Steelers QBs coach Randy Fichtner is the “favorite” to replace Haley in Pittsburgh, but there’s no firm decision regarding their offensive coordinator as of now.

Alex Marvez of the Sporting News is hearing that Steelers QBs coach Randy Fichtner is “front runner” to replace Todd Haley as offensive coordinator if/when change is made.

Marvez adds that nothing is official right now, but this is at least something to watch in the coming days.

There has been a lot of buzz about Haley’s future with the Steelers, given that there have been issues between him and QB Ben Roethlisberger and he’s currently a free agent.

Typically, teams try to sign their coordinators to extensions before they become free agents if they’re interested in keeping them around, so it’s very possible they could be moving in a new direction.

Fichtner, 54, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with Michigan back in 1986. He bounced around with a number of schools before being hired by Arkansas State as their offensive coordinator in 1997.

Fichtner later took the offensive coordinator/QBs coach job at Memphis where he coached for seven years before being hired as the Steelers’ WRs coach.

Pittsburgh promoted Fichtner to QBs in 2010 and he’s spent the past eight years in this position.

We’ll have more regarding possible changes for the Steelers as the news is available.
