Steelers Tried Out Rugby Star Tom Burgess

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Steelers are the latest team to bring in British rugby star Tom Burgess in for a tryout.

  • Schefter adds that Burgess has interest from multiple NFL teams right now.

Burgess has reportedly worked out for the Giants, Jets and Bills in recent weeks as a tight end.

It appears as though Burgess is looking to follow the same path Jarryd Hayne took to the NFL. Hayne managed to make the 49ers’ 53-man roster before later being added to their practice squad midseason.

It’s worth mentioning that Burgess is 23 years old, which happens to be four years younger than Hayne. On top of that, playing tight end could increase his odds of landing with an NFL team before the end of the year.

There’s also a chance someone could sign him to a future/reserve contract and see how he does next summer.

South Sydney Rabbitohs HC Michael Maguire said they fully support Burgess’ decision to pursue an NFL opportunity.

We’re fully supportive of our players trying to improve themselves,” said Maguire, via Rabbitohs.com.au. “This will provide a unique and valuable experience for Thomas, one that he will no doubt learn a lot from and in turn be able to bring back to the Rabbitohs for the coming season.

We’ll have more regarding Burgess signing on with an NFL team as the news is available.
