Alex Marvez of FOX Sports is reporting that there’s a “strong possibility” that Eric Mangini will return as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator next season.
- Marvez mentions that this moves makes sense, considering Mangini’s background running a 3-4 defense.
- Matt Barrows reports that Mangini met with Kelly on Friday.
New HC Chip Kelly is still working to fill out his coaching staff, but it sounds like he’s at least open to the idea of maintaining some continuity on the defensive side of the ball.
Mangini, 44, was actually hired by the 49ers as their tight ends coach back in 2013. However he was promoted to defensive coordinator after they parted ways with Jim Harbaugh last year and replaced him with Jim Tomsula.
In 2015, Mangini’s defense ranked No. 29 yards allowed, No. 27, in pass yards, No. 29 in rush yards, and No. 18 in points allowed, so there’s plenty of work to be done next year.
