According to Adam Schefter, the Titans have told RB Dion Lewis they plan to release him.
This move doesn’t come as a big surprise, as Lewis saw his role reduced with the emergence of RB Derrick Henry.
Releasing Lewis seems to be a positive indicator that the Titans expect to have Henry back with the team in 2020, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the league year.
Per Over The Cap, releasing Lewis saves the Titans a little over $4 million in cap space while incurring a dead cap charge of $1.125 million.
Lewis, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Eagles back in 2011. After two years in Philadelphia, Lewis was traded to the Browns in return for Emmanuel Acho. He had a brief stint with the Colts before signing a future/reserve contract with the Patriots in 2015.
After completing a three-year, $3.1 million contract with the Patriots that included a $600,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $1.2 million for the 2017 season, Lewis signed with the Titans in 2018.
His four-year deal with Tennessee was worth $20 million with $11.5 million guaranteed.
In 2019, Lewis appeared in all 16 games for the Titans and recorded 54 rushing attempts for 209 yards (3.9 YPC) to go along with 25 receptions for 164 yards (6.6 YPC) and one touchdown.
