According to Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have traded LB Andre Smith to the Bills for a draft pick.
The pick is a conditional seventh in 2023, per Rapoport.
Carolina had previously made clear its intention to waive Smith but as sometimes happens another team stepped up with an offer to bypass the waiver system.
In this case, the Bills have quite a bit of familiarity with Smith given the strong Carolina roots throughout their coaching staff.
Smith was competing for a backup position in Carolina at linebacker and had been mostly a special teams contributor his first two seasons.
Smith, 23, was drafted in the seventh round by Carolina out of UNC in 2018. He was entering the third year of his four-year, $2.5 million deal and was set to make a base salary of $750,000.
In 2019, Smith appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers and recorded five total tackles.
