Zach Mettenberger, Luis Perez & David Cobb Among Those Trying Out For XFL

According to Greg Auman, some of the other players trying out for the XFL during the showcase in St. Louis include QB Zach Mettenberger, RB David Cobb, RB Jonas Gray, TE Clay Harbor, DE Dee Liner, DE Jacquies Smith and QB Luis Perez.

Mettenberger, 27, is a former sixth-round pick of the Titans back in 2014. The Titans cut him loose back in 2016 and he was later claimed off of waivers by the Chargers.

Los Angeles would later waive Mettenberger coming out of the preseason and he was once again claimed off waivers, this time by the Steelers. However, Pittsburgh waived in 2017 and he’s been out of the league since then.

In 2015, Mettenberger appeared in seven games and threw for 935 yards while completing 60.8 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Perez, 24, wound up signing on with the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M-Commerce back in May of 2018. He agreed to a three-year, $1.71 million contract, but was waived coming out of the preseason.

Perez had a brief stint on the Rams’ practice squad before signing with the Birmingham Iron of the AAF. After the league folded, he landed with the Eagles for a month before being waived during OTA’s.

In 2019 with the Iron, Perez threw for 1,460 passing yards while completing 52.3 percent of his passes to go along with five touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 75 yards.

Cobb, 26, is a former fifth-round pick of the Titans back in 2015. He was in the second year of his four-year, $2,252,668 rookie contract when he was cut by the Titans in the final week of the preseason.

After a brief stint with the Steelers, Cobb signed on to the Bears’ practice squad before returning to the team on a future/reserve contract in 2017. However, Cobb was later released following the 2017 draft.

In 2015, Cobb appeared in seven games for the Titans and ran for 146 yards on 52 carries (2.8 YPC) to go along with one reception for -2 yards receiving and a single touchdown.
