New Buccaneers HC Dirk Koetter Says He Wants To Re-Sign RB Doug Martin

New Buccaneers HC Dirkย Koetter said that he wants impending free agent RB Doug Martin back next year.

โ€œTell Jason Licht that I want Doug Martin!โ€ Koetter said smiling, via PewterReport.com. โ€œTell Jason. Iโ€™m putting my name on that. I want Doug Martin to be a Buc, so you tell him.โ€

โ€œWho wouldnโ€™t want Doug Martin back?โ€ Koetter added. โ€œHeโ€™s a terrific football player, so of course we would like to have him back. Jasonโ€™s got control of that and I think he wants Doug back, too, but you guys have to get him on that one. But Iโ€™m pretty sure he does.โ€

Buccaneers GM Jason Lichtย confirmed a few weeks agoย thatย they’veย begun the process ofย discussing a long-termย contract extension.

โ€œWeโ€™ve already talked a little bit,โ€™โ€™ Licht said, via Roy Cummings of the Tampa Bay Tribune. โ€œWe will definitely be talking (more). Weโ€™d love to have Doug back.โ€™โ€™

Martin added that he loves playing in Tampa Bay and would like to return for the 2016 season.

โ€œI love it here and I have a beautiful home here,โ€™โ€™ Martin said. โ€œIโ€™d love to come back. But right now Iโ€™m focused on our last game. Iโ€™m aware theyโ€™re talking, but Iโ€™ll let them handle that for now.โ€™โ€™

The Buccaneersย opted not to exercise hisย fifth-year option backย in May, which leaves him in position to test the open market.

Martin, 26, played outย hisย four-year, $6,787,528 rookie contract, which included $5.472 million guaranteed. He madeย a base salary of $1,315,572 for the 2015 season before becoming an unrestricted free agentย in the coming months.

This season, Martin ran for 1,402 yards on 288 carries (4.9 YPC) to go along with 33 receptions for 271 yards receiving and sevenย total touchdowns over the course of 15ย games.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2ย running backย out of 67 qualifying players.

We have Martin listed as the No. 16ย playerย in our Top 50 – 2016 Free Agents list.
