49ers Cut Five Players, Sign 7 Undrafted Free Agents

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they’ve waived LB Jimmie Gilbert, LB Boseko Lokombo, CB Dexter McCoil (non-football injury), LB Donavin Newsom (failed physical) and DB Channing Stribling.

The 49ers also officially signed seven undrafted rookies on Monday including:

  1. Ross Dwelley/TE/San Diego
  2. Steven Dunbar/WR/Houston
  3. Alan Knott/C/South Carolina
  4. Jack Heneghan/QB/Dartmouth
  5. Jamar McGloster/OT/Syracuse
  6. Niles Scott/DT/Frostburg
  7. Terrell Williams/S/Houston

Newsom, 24, wound up signing on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri back in May of last year. He signed a three-year, $1.66 million contract with San Francisco but was waived with an injury designation during the preseason and later reverted to the team’s injured reserve list.

Newsom stands to make base salaries of $555,000 and $645,000 over the next two years of the agreement.

During his college career, Newsom recorded 162 tackles, 5.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, a recovery and seven pass defenses over the course of four seasons and 43 games.
