49ers Notes: Dashon Goldson & Delanie Walker

DaShon Goldson

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee mentions that the 49ers do not intend to use the franchise tag this offseason, which means that S Dashon Goldson will likely test the free agent market.

The franchise tag would cost the 49ers roughly around $8.16 million to tag Goldson for a second consecutive offseason. Goldson has actually been an unrestricted free agent for three straight seasons.

During a press conference at the NFL Combine 49ers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh mentioned that Goldson is deserving of a long-term contract.  However, general manager Trent Baalke also weighed in shortly after stating that; “you can’t pay everybody, and you certainly can’t pay everybody if you’re overpaying others.

Goldson is currently listed as the No. 15 free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents List.

Delanie Walker

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com writes that if the 49ers do intend to use the franchise tag this offseason, TE Delanie Walker would be the second option just behind DB Dashon Goldson.

Since Walker is coming off a deal that paid him roughly $2 million annually, Maiocco believes they should consider locking him up to a long-term deal versus paying him a franchise tender of $5.968 million.

Walker is a young option and is a great run and pass blocker for the 49ers, but has been a liability in the passing game.

We have Walker listed as the No. 91 free agent in our Top 51-100 Free Agents List.

  1. I can’t imagine how good the 49ers are going to be next season, with the trade of Smith for some more draft picks and the 11 they have already Harbaugh is going to build a dynasty out there….

    • It’s just incredible to see the resources that they have available to them. They were a few yards away from winning the Super Bowl!

I will admit that this kind of success creates its own issues for NFL teams. They’ll need to create cap space for Colin Kaepernick, Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Mike Iupati and Aldon Smith on top of the contracts handed out to Navorro Bowman and Patrick Willis. It’s going to be tough, but this would be considered good problems to have if you’re an NFL team.
