49ers PK David Akers Losing Kicking Competition To Billy Cundiff?

Matt Maiocco of Comcast Sports Net reports that during 49ers practice today, PK David Akers made 16 of 21 field goals during warm-ups while fellow PK Billy Cundiff made 7 of 8.

โ€œThe telling sign to me is the fact is heโ€™s missing them wide left, which means heโ€™s not getting his hips through the ball,โ€ said former place kicker Joe Nedney. โ€œHeโ€™s not swinging confidently through the ball.โ€

Maiocco adds that Cundiff displaying better leg strength than Akers, but also adds that Akers struggles could stem from a โ€œdouble sports herniaโ€ surgery that he underwent last February.

The fallout for Akers continues. He had a fantastic year in 2011, but he now finds himself fighting for a job while the team prepares for the playoff game. Akers just doesnโ€™t seem to be very reliable from any distance and Cundiff appears to be in the driverโ€™s seat at this point in time.
