49ers Placing Jimmy Garoppolo & George Kittle On Injured Reserve

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan announced Tuesday that they’re placing QB Jimmy Garoppolo and TE George Kittle on injured reserve, per Nick Wagoner

According to Shanahan, Garoppolo suffered “a whole new” high ankle sprain last week and it’s worse than the one had been dealing with, per Matt Maiocco

As for Kittle, Kittle expected to miss eight weeks with a fractured bone in his foot.

It’s worth mentioning that the NFL changed the rules regarding injured reserve for the 2020 season and players can return from the list in just three weeks.

Nick Mullens took over for Garoppolo on Sunday and will likely serve as the team’s starter moving.

Garoppolo, 28, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2014. The Patriots traded him to the 49ers in 2017 at the trade deadline in return for a 2018 second-round pick.

Garoppolo was in line to be an unrestricted free agent when the 49ers signed him to a five-year, $137.5 million contract during the 2018 offseason.

In 2020, Garoppolo has appeared in six games for the 49ers and completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,096 yards, seven touchdowns, and five touchdowns.

Kittle, 27, is a former fifth-round pick of the 49ers out of Iowa back in 2017. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $2.69 million contract and set to make a base salary of $735,000 in 2020 when he agreed to a new five-year, $75 million extension with the 49ers this past August.

In 2020, Kittle has appeared in six games for the 49ers and caught 37 passes for 474 yards receiving and two touchdowns. He’s also rushed twice for 17 yards.
