According to Ian Rapoport, 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is not expected to return from his ankle injury this season.
Garoppolo hasn’t practiced yet since going on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain. He won’t play next week against the Cardinals in Week 16.
Rapoport adds Garoppolo only way he would potentially suit up and risk reinjury in Week 17 is if San Francisco could still make the playoffs.
49ers TE George Kittle is further along in his recovery from his injury, a broken foot. Kittle practiced this week and has been cleared to play going forward.
But Rapoport adds San Francisco will also be careful about playing him in meaningless games down the stretch.
Garoppolo, 28, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2014. The Patriots traded him to the 49ers in 2017 at the trade deadline in return for a 2018 second-round pick.
Garoppolo was in line to be an unrestricted free agent when the 49ers signed him to a five-year, $137.5 million contract during the 2018 offseason.
In 2020, Garoppolo has appeared in six games for the 49ers and completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,096 yards, seven touchdowns, and five touchdowns.
We’ll have more on Garoppolo as the news is available.
