49ers coach Jim Tomsulaย told reporters onย Friday that Colin Kaepernick will remain theirย starting quarterbackย in the coming weeks, despite another disappointing outing.
“Colin’s our quarterback,” saidย Tomsula, perย Matt Barrows. “No controversy.”
Following Thursday’s loss to the Seahawks,ย Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.comย mentionedย there’s talk that “something big”ย which led to some speculation that the 49ers could make a chance at quarterback.
โIโve heard whispers behind the scenes thatย something big could happen,โ Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com said followingย Thursdayโs game. โI donโt know what itโs going to be. I donโt know what theyโre talking about. But clearly the 49ers canโt go on this way. The coaching staff looks overmatched, the players look overmatched. The 49ers were plain and simple overmatched today against a team that came in with four losses. . . . There are a lot of very upset people in the 49ers organization.โ
49ers owner Jed York told Jason Cole of B/R at the owners meeting a few weeks agoย that they are “a longs ways away” from giving up on Kaepernick as their starting quarterback, and they do not have any plans to move in a different direction.
Instead, York says they plan to be patient with Kaepernick and the coaching staff wants to see how he handles his current slump, which will ultimately help them determine if he can be their franchise quarterback.
York also stressed the importance of having a solid quarterback in this era of the NFL, and getting the right guy who possesses all the physical tools to be among the best in the league.
Kaepernick, 27, signed a six year, $114 million extension with the 49ers back in June of last year. However, Kaepernick received just $12,973,766 in full guarantees.
In sevenย games this season, Kaepernick has thrown for 1,453 yards while completing 61.4 percent of his passes to go along with sixย touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s also added 228 yards rushing and a touchdown.
We’ll have more regarding the 49ers as the news is available.
