AFC Notes: Bengals, Browns, Ravens

Bengals

Journeyman LB Josh Bynes is expected to play a key role for the Bengals defense this season and said he felt like joining the Bengals was a great opportunity for him as he enters the tenth year of his NFL career.

“I felt like it was a great opportunity for me,” Bynes told Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer. “I know it’s year 10, but it doesn’t feel like year 10. I feel like I got a ton of football still left in me. It’s a great opportunity to come here and be in a position to play. I still want to play. As long as my body is feeling great. I told my wife as long as my body is feeling great and I’m healthy and I’m feeling good, I want to keep going.”

Browns

Mary Kay Cabot reports that Browns LB Mack Wilson is receiving a second opinion from orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews but may not know whether he requires surgery for another few weeks because he must wait for swelling to subside before making a decision.

Fellow Browns LB B.J. Goodson said losing Wilson was “definitely disheartening” but he’s hopeful the second-year linebacker doesn’t miss significant time.

“It’s definitely disheartening to see a teammate, and for me a brother, go down like that,’’ said Goodson. “Hopefully, we will get him back soon. We hope that he doesn’t [miss significant time], but if he does, it’s an opportunity for somebody to step up, and someone has to step up.”

  • Browns RB Nick Chubb has been attending meetings and is not suffering from headaches while RB Kareem Hunt has been taking advantage of the opportunities to take first-team reps in Chubb’s absence. (Aditi Kinkhabwala)
  • While the Browns hosted free agent kickers Nick Folk, Matt McCrane, Kai Forbath and Cody Parkey for tryouts, Ian Rapoport says there will be no immediate signing and this was more to update their emergency list with the COVID-19 unpredictability.

Ravens

  • Despite not signing WR Dez Bryant after he visited with the team, Todd Karpovich does not think the Ravens’ have closed the door on him, as there are a lot of variables that need to be discussed prior to any potential signing.
  • Jeremy Fowler reports that the Ravens did not sign WR Dwayne Harris, who worked out around the same time as Bryant. Harris is a good kick returner that the team could turn to for help in the future if needed.
  • Jason La Canfora says there is “mountain frustration” among Ravens’ defensive backs about S Earl Thomas being punctual and focused and not freelancing.
  • Thomas was involved in a skirmish on Friday with fellow S Chuck Clark and La Canfora mentions that these issues played into that situation.
  • According to La Canfora, some veterans think DeShon Elliott merits more reps than he’s gotten.
  • La Canfora says Thomas is “not the most popular guy there.”
