“All he needed was an opportunity. He had everything else. He was smart, he was dependable, mentally tough, team guy, worked hard at it. The big thing for him is once we got settled in the right path, he just got better every day. And the thing about Daryl, too, is he looks his best when he’s playing the actual game. Sometimes, he might not look like the most graceful guy in some drills, but we don’t break out drills at halftime of the game and they give us points for running through bags. They give us points for executing plays and scoring touchdowns. He does a great job when it’s real football.”
Jets
Jets OC Mike Lafleur said he thinks WR Corey Davis is a perfect fit in the Shanahan system.
“Corey could be good in any system,” LaFleur said, via Jets Wire. “He’s really good in this system because he’s got physicality, he’s got size, he can put his foot in the ground, one-foot cut and separate.”
Lafleur specified that Davis has the ability to separate very quickly, which should help a rookie quarterback like Zach Wilson.
“That’s what this offense kind of started to become,” LaFleur said. “When you have a guy that can put his foot in the ground sharply, still run away from you, catch the ball — our quarterbacks feel that guy. You can feel him going over the middle. You feel like he’s got a big radius and on top of it. He’s fearless. The reason you know that is because you’ve seen it on tape.”
Patriots
- Brian Baldinger of NFL Network believes the Patriots’ quarterback job is Cam Newton‘s to lose, adding that whatever Newton has left in the tank will be on display this season in a much-improved offense.
- James Palmer points out that what rookie QB Mac Jones has shown this offseason cannot be ignored. Palmer says that the Patriots have pushed Jones to get better and are preparing him as if he were going to be the starter this season.
- If Newton were to show issues with accuracy, Palmer suggests that this could open up the door for Jones to become the starter as long as he protects the football.
