AFC Notes: Browns, Ravens, Steelers

Browns

  • Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot notes Browns first-round CB Greg Newsome may have exceeded expectations during OTAs and minicamp and could start right away.
  • He’ll compete with Browns CB Greedy Williams, who is still ramping up gradually after missing all of last season with nerve damage in his shoulder.

Ravens

Ravens HC John Harbaugh said third-round OL Ben Cleveland is a great fit for the team’s offense.

“I think we have a pretty well-defined and clear understanding of what we want to be on offense. He fits that,” Harbaugh said, via ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. “That’s a big, strong, powerful guy that likes to rough people up, and that’s how we want to play.”

OC Greg Roman thought getting Cleveland in the third round was a steal for the Ravens.

“He was the best run-blocker in the draft this year,” Roman said. “We were able to draft him when we were, which is unbelievable. We’re really excited about developing Ben into an absolute road-grading offensive guard.”

Steelers

Hall of Fame and former Steelers HC Bill Cowher said Ben Roethlisberger is prepared to lead a terrific season for the organization given skeptics are assuming “he’s done.”

“He is a great competitor,” Cowher said, via Nick Shook of Around the NFL. “I’m sure he’s just thriving right now with the fact everyone thinks that he’s done, the Steelers are done. I used to always say to people, I’d say the greatest thing in sports is to do something nobody thinks you can do. It’s one of the greatest accomplishments. And I think right now Ben is just thriving on that. He can’t wait to get out there, probably (champing) at the bit to prove (it).”

Cowher views Roethlisberger as a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

“I would be very surprised if he didn’t have a great year this year. It’s a tough division. He’s a Hall of Fame player, first ballot, no question about it. He’s won two Super Bowls and been to three, yet he continues to play the game with a great passion, a great competitor, and I think you’ll see that this year.”
