AFC Notes: Jets, Patriots, Ravens

Jets

  • Rich Cimini reports that Jets’ recently hired HC Adam Gase originally “balked at the idea” of signing DC Gregg Williams‘ son, Blake Williams, to their staff, which reportedly upset Williams.
  • Cimini writes there “seems to be a compromise” now that the Jets signed Blake as a defensive assistant.

Patriots

Patriots S Patrick Chung said he successfully underwent surgery on his broken arm

Surgery is good, fellows,” said Chung, via his Instagram account. “Iโ€™m right back, Iโ€™m right back, Iโ€™m right back.โ€

Ravens

Ravens GM Eric DeCosta mentioned that their goal is to “put ourselves in a really good salary cap situation”. It is worth mentioning that Ravens’ veteran QB Joe Flacco is set to count $26.5 million next season.

One of the things that we want to do is put ourselves in a really good salary cap situation now and also moving forward,” DeCosta said, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “Thatโ€™s the goal, thatโ€™s the challenge. I think we can get there. I think weโ€™ll make strides this year. I think weโ€™ll make more strides next year. Moving forward, thatโ€™s our plan. So, having a quarterback on a rookie deal is a big part of that.

Though Hensley writes that DeCosta is not expected to spend heavily in free agency, he said the Ravens want to sign “playmakers”,big, nasty offensive linemen“, and “running backs who can break big gainers.”

I think what we really want is just good players,” DeCosta said. “We want guys that can make plays — playmakers, guys that have the chance to help us win a football game in crunch time. We also want big, physical, tough, aggressive, nasty, mean offensive linemen who can protect Lamar and help open up some running holes. We want tight ends who can make plays. We want running backs who can take the tough yard; we want running backs who can break big gainers.
