AFC Notes: Josh Allen, Romeo Doubs, Bills, Jets, Patriots

Bills

Bills QB Josh Allen suffered a broken bone in his foot in Week 16, which required him to wear a boot. Buffalo GM Brandon Beane said Allen is getting back to 100 percent and expects him to be fully recovered when they return for OTAs.

“His foot, I don’t want to say it’s 100 percent, but he’s good,” Beane said, via Tim Graham of The Athletic. “When he gets back in April, we expect him to be full-go.”

Beane reiterated that their medical staff is confident that Allen will be ready for football activities in April.

“Our medical team has checked up on him and he’s talked to the surgeon that’s done it. I don’t know every single conversation they’ve had, but (Bills head athletic trainer) Nate Breske and (Bills lead physician) Les Bisson have let us know he’s on track and should be ready to roll once we’re actually doing football stuff in April.”

Jets

  • Jets GM Darren Mougey said he had a good visit with Alabama QB Ty Simpson, and talked about his lack of starting experience in college: “We want the biggest sample size we can. But there’s a lot of good things to see in the games he did play.” (Zack Rosenblatt)
  • Mougey said contract talks with RB Breece Hall are in a good place, and he’s hopeful they will get a deal done sometime after the draft. (Rosenblatt)
  • New York HC Aaron Glenn on QB Geno Smith: “There’s something about a quarterback with a chip on his shoulder. He’s proven a lot in this league, especially in Seattle. He fits exactly what we’re trying to do.” (Rosenblatt)
  • Glenn also said it “just didn’t work out” with former QB Justin Fields, and blames himself for the failures there. (Rosenblatt)
  • Glenn kept it brief when talking about Hall: “I’m a huge fan of Breece. He’s a top running back in this league … Breece knows where I stand.” (Rosenblatt)
  • When asked about who he thinks will take a leap, Glenn specifically named TE Mason Taylor: “I think Mason is going to have a hell of a year.” (Rosenblatt)
  • Glenn commented on the idea that Smith will be a stopgap QB for 2027: “I don’t think that’s a question for me to answer because he can go out there and throw for 4,000 yards and have 30 touchdowns and no interceptions and you think we’re just going to let him go? (laughs) That just goes by year. I do know this: He’s excited about being here. He’s going to be our quarterback and I look forward to that.” (Rosenblatt)
  • Texas Tech QB Behren Morton got dinner with the Jets before his pro day. (Arye Pulli)

Patriots

The Packers lost WR Romeo Doubs on the free-agent market after he signed a four-year, $68 million contract with the Patriots. During ESPN’s “Wilde & Tausch” show, co-host and former Packers OL Mark Tauscher said Doubs was expected to sign with a new team this offseason after Green Bay took WR Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

“This was one of those things, you saw it coming really before last season. Once [receiver Matthew] Golden got picked in the first round, I think everyone understood Romeo was going to play, and the vibe many fans had was, ‘Go have a really good season, get paid and the Packers get a nice compensatory draft pick.’ That’s pretty much how it played out,” Tauscher said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Tauscher thinks Doubs’ contract was “really good” for a second receiver.

“That’s not ‘wide receiver 1’ money. He was a really good ‘2’ here. He could be a really good secondary option, and my guess is that’s how New England views it the way the contract played out,” Tauscher said. “That doesn’t mean he’s not going to get more opportunities. There might be some things New England looks at and says, ‘There’s more potential there.'”

Doubs was notably suspended for one game by the Packers in 2024 after missing practice. Tauscher was impressed by how the receiver regained trust within the locker room.

It was unprecedented. I thought at that moment it was going to be really hard for Romeo to regain that trust within the organization. When stuff like that happens, it usually ends badly immediately,” Tauscher said. “You’re talking about another 15-16 months until he signed with New England. It ended up being just a blip in Romeo’s career arc.”
