AFC South Notes: Colts, Jaguars, Texans

Colts

After his recovery from shoulder surgery turned into a soap opera spanning years, Colts QB Andrew Luck said he’s changed the way he looks at injuries.

“Things can be stubborn sometimes,” Luck said via Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star. “I certainly don’t feel as young as I once did, but am certainly also being conservative with this. It’s one of the lessons I learned from my shoulder. . . . A lot less anxiety in my life than before. I think [that’s] trusting myself, and trusting the process.”

Jaguars

Jaguars OC John DeFilippo said he’s been unexpectedly impressed with the Jaguars receiving corps so far this spring.

The Jaguars signed Chris Conley and Terrelle Pryor to join Dede Westbrook and 2018 second-round pick D.J. Chark. Jacksonville should also get Marqise Lee back from injury.

“I’m going to be flat out honest with you: It [his opinion] has [changed],” DeFilippo said via ESPN’s Michael DiRocco. “We have a lot more speed there than I thought. We have some guys in that room that can fly, some big guys that can fly. I’m a big believer in the receiver room and diversity. When I say diversity, it doesn’t have anything to do with where you’re from or your race or whatever. Different body types, different skill levels, in terms of [us having] a bigger guy that can body someone up and maybe a guy like Dede Westbrook that is a little bit of a smaller guy, but can wiggle and get himself open in different ways. You don’t want all big guys. You don’t want all small guys. You want a good, diverse group in that room that brings different skill sets to the table.”

Texans

Regarding Texans’ executive Cal McNair‘s decision to fire former GM Brian Gaine, HC Bill O’Brien said McNair has “his vision” of where he sees the organization going.

He had to make a tough decision. He evaluated everything and he told me exactly what he wanted me to do to improve and help with his vision of where he sees this organization going or where it needs to go in his opinion,” said O’Brien, via James Palmer.

  • O’Brien called S Jahleel Addae, who the Texans signed in free agency, “an impressive addition.” (Aaron Wilson)
  • Texans CB Bradley Roby hasn’t done much during minicamp after being limited for OTA’s. The team hopes to see more during training camp. (Wilson)
  • O’Brien said RB Josh Ferguson was the top candidate to be the third-down back: “That position is very unique, that sub back, that third-down back.” (Wilson)
