On Sunday, Bears OL Kyle Long announced via his Twitter account that he’s stepping away from the NFL to “get [his] body right.”

Long has dealt with a number of injuries in recent years and has been placed on injured reserve in each of the past four seasons with ankle, shoulder, foot and hip issues.

Long, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Bears back in 2013. He’s in the fourth year of his six-year, $50.358 million contract that included $30 million and stands to make a base salary of $8 million for the 2019 season.

Long agreed to a restructured contract this last February after missing half the 2018 season. The Bears eliminated the 2021 year of his contract, made 2020 a team option and turned $2.5 million of his base salary into incentives.

In 2019, Long was limited to appearing in four games for the Bears, making four starts for them.

  1. Dude, I still think you’re on a par with the guys from ’85. I’m sorry about the bad breaks and injuries, and as you said, I looked fat enough sitting on my Harley. Well, I’m even worse now and I’m fighting hard to keep from exploding and dying. I wish you the best and just want to express my thanks for all the great work you did for the team.
