Bills Sign DTs Tanzel Smart & Justin Zimmer, Waive Two

The Bills announced on Sunday they have signed DTs Tanzel Smart and Justin Zimmer to the active roster.

To clear space, Buffalo waived WR Nick Easley and DT Niles Scott, the latter with an injury designation.

Smart and Zimmer were part of a group workout for Buffalo on Saturday.

Smart, 25, was a sixth-round pick out of Tulane back in 2017. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $2.56 million rookie contract and set to make a base salary of $735,000 for the 2020 season when the Rams waived him in May.

In 2019, Smart appeared in 13 games for the Rams and recorded seven tackles.

Zimmer, 27, originally signed on with the Bills as an undrafted free agent out of Ferris State back in 2016. He lasted just a few months in Buffalo before he was waived at the start of the season.

The Saints later signed Zimmer to their practice squad towards the end of the 2016 season and brought him back on a futures contract a month later. Unfortunately, the Saints waived Zimmer and he sat out the entire 2017 season.

Zimmer signed on with the Falcons in 2018 and he managed to make their 53-man roster coming out of the preseason. He bounced on and off the active roster during the season before being waived and brought back on the practice squad in 2019. The Browns signed Zimmer off Atlanta’s practice squad late in 2019.

In 2019, Zimmer appeared in two games for the Browns and totaled five tackles.
