Packers Hire Titans OC Matt LaFleur As Next Head Coach

Update:

Tom Pelissero reports that the Packers and Matt LaFleur agreed to a four-year contract with a fifth-year option on Tuesday.

Adam Schefter reports that the Packers are “zeroing in on” hiring Titans OC Matt LaFleur as their next head coach.

  • According to Schefter, the Packers have begun notifying other head coach candidates that they’re out of the running for the job and they’ve made their choice.
  • Schefter adds that the Packers have offered LeFleur the job, so it appears as though he’ll be the team’s next head coach.
  • Ian Rapoport confirms that the Packers are, in fact, hiring LaFleur as their new head coach.
  • Rapoport adds that former Buccaneers OC Todd Monken was the other really strong candidate for the Packers’ job, but Green Bay elected to go with LaFleur, rather than do a second round of interviews.

In total, the Packers included 10 candidates including:

  1. Former Colts & Lions HC Jim Caldwell
  2. Former Colts HC Chuck Pagano
  3. Interim HC Joe Philbin
  4. Patriots OC Josh McDaniels
  5. Patriots DC Brian Flores
  6. Titans OC Matt LaFluer
  7. Saints OC Pete Carmichael Jr
  8. Former Dolphins HC Adam Gase
  9. Saints assistant HC/TEs coach Dan Campbell
  10. Buccaneers OC Todd Monken

It will be interesting to see what kind of staff LaFleur can put together in Green Bay, but he gives the team a new offensive direction after several years of Mike McCarthy’s west-coast system.

LaFleur, 39, began his NFL coaching career with the Texans as their offensive quality control coach back in 2008. He later took over as the Redskins’ QBs coach in 2010 and spent four years with Washington.

After one year at Notre Dame, LaFleur returned to the NFL when the Falcons hired him as their QBs coach in 2015. He spent two years in Atlanta and one year as the Rams’ offensive coordinator before joining the Titans a year ago.

In 2018, the Titans’ offense ranked No. 25 in total yards, No. 27 in points scored, No. 7 in rushing and No. 29 passing yards.
