Panthers Officially Sign DT Gerald McCoy To One-Year Deal

Update:

The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that they’ve officially signed DT Gerald McCoy to a one-year contract.

“It’s great to have Gerald on our side now,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “We are very familiar with his skill set after facing him over the years and know that he not only brings a wealth of talent as a player but is also a tremendous person. We are extremely happy to have Gerald as a part of the Panthers organization.”

According to Adam Schefter, the Panthers are signing DT Gerald McCoy to a one-year contract worth around $8.5 million and can increase up to $10.25 million with incentives.

Ian Rapoport reports that McCoy receives a $4 million signing bonus, a $500,000 camp roster bonus, a $500,000 in active roster bonuses, $500,000 for totaling 6.5 sacks, $1.5 million for 8 sacks, $250,000 for making the Pro Bowl, and $250,000 for the team making the playoffs.

Rapoport adds that McCoy’s contract includes just $4 million guaranteed.

McCoy had visited with the Browns, Ravens and Panthers last week before deciding to take the weekend to figure out who he’ll be signing with.

The Panthers freed up some cap space last week by restructuring WR Torrey Smith‘s contract, which for shadowed a potential deal with McCoy

Carolina now has a really deep group of defensive linemen that includes Kawann Short, Dontari Poe and Vernon Butler.

McCoy, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2010. He was in the fifth year of his seven-year, $95.2 million contract and set to make a base salary of $13 million in 2019 when the Buccaneers released him

In 2018, McCoy appeared in 14 games for the Buccaneers and recorded 28 tackles, six sacks, and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 interior defender out of 112 qualifying players.
