Broncos Have Put Contract Talks With WR Emmanuel Sanders On Hold For Now

According to Mike Klis of 9 News, the Broncos have put contract talks with WR Emmanuel Sanders on hold. However, Klis says talks between the two parties are notย off, but on hold right now.

Denver has just over a week to hammer out a long-term extension for franchise OLB Von Miller, so this could be a temporary break in talks with Sanders until they’ve figured out what’s going to happen with Miller.

Last week,ย Troy Renck of the Denver Postย mentioned that the Broncos haveย had “good talks” with Sanders regarding aย potential contractย extension. Although, Renck pointed out thatย the recent contracts signed by receivers like Doug Baldwin and Allen Hurns have changed the landscape a bit.

A few weeks ago, the Seahawks gave Baldwin aย four-year, $46 million extension, which leaves him among the top six highest paid receivers in the NFL.

It seems likely that Sanders has his sights set on a similar contract to Baldwin’s new deal, and possible more. The Broncos have been very cautious with signing players to new deals in recent years, which explains why there’s still a big gap between them andย Miller, so it’s possible that Sanders could end the final year of his contract and test the open market next year.

Sanders has said previously that his “heart is in Denver” and he’s hoping to retire as a Bronco.

โ€œObviously, my heart is in Denver, this city has been so good to me beyond what I can explain,โ€ Sanders said. โ€œFrom the Broncos Huddle, being with you, to going out and seeing in my first year having so many jerseys, and having so many fans out here in this market. Itโ€™s just great to me.

โ€œWho knows whatโ€™s going to happen with the contract situation. I want to retire a Bronco. I think everyone wants to know, but itโ€™s all about being able to say, โ€˜Iโ€™m getting paid what I put out.โ€™โ€™

Sanders, 29, Sanders, 29, is a former third-round pick of the Steelers back in 2010. After playing out his rookie contract, Sanders signed a three-year, $15 million contractย that includedย $6 million guaranteed.

He’s currently in the final year of the agreement and stands to make a base salary of $5 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Sanders appeared in 15 games for the Broncos and recorded 76 receptions for, 1,135 yards receiving and six touchdowns.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 10 receiver out of 121 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding a new contract for Sanders as the news is available.
