Buccaneers Re-Sign S Major Wright, Place RB Charles Sims On Short-Term IR

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported earlier this morning that the Buccaneers have re-signed S Major Wright to a contract.

Rapoport added that the Bucs placed rookie RB Charles Sims on injured reserve with the designation to return in order to create a roster spot for Wright.

Wright, 26, was among the Buccaneers final roster cuts this past weekend. Last year, he appeared in 15 games for the Bears and totaled 101 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown.

However, he was a liability in coverage and even struggled to be an effective run-defender for the Bears. Pro Football Focus rated him as the worst qualifying safety in the league last year.

As for Sims, there had been talk that short-term injured reserve was a likely option for him after he forced to undergo surgery on his right ankle.

Doug Martin figures to handle a sizable workload now that Sims will miss a large portion of the season, but backups Bobby Rainey and Mike James figure to be in the mix as well.
