Cardinals Owner Says CB Patrick Peterson Trade Is “Not Happening”

In recent weeks, Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson surfaced as someone who could be available ahead of this year’s trade deadline.

However, Cardinals owner Michael Bidwell tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that trading Peterson is “not happening.”

“Not true,” Bidwill said. “I’ve seen the speculation. But it’s not happening. Not happening.”

Last week, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that the Cardinals could end up being one of the most active teams ahead of this year’s trade deadline and leagues sources have indicated to him that Peterson could be among the players Arizona is open to moving.

La Canfora mentioned that the Cardinals’ front office is “keeping an open mind” about repositioning themselves for the future after getting off to a slow start and turning to rookie QB Josh Rosen as their starter.

Several sources have told La Canfora that the tenor of things in Arizona has “shifted significantly” and it’s now to the point where a trade involving Peterson is “quite possible.

La Canfora previously reported that the Cardinals are looking to trade S/LB Deone Bucannon and LB Haason Reddick. Meanwhile, GMs around the league that have spoken to La Canfora have wondered if WR Larry Fitzgerald may finally be open to a trade after resisting such a move throughout his career.

Peterson, 28, is a former first-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2011. He’s currently in the fifth year of his seven-year, $83.02 million that included $48 million guaranteed and set to make base salaries of $11 million over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Peterson has appeared in six games for the Cardinals and recorded 29 tackles, one sack, an interception, a fumble recovery and two pass defenses.
