Chargers Promote RB Andre Williams, Waive S Dexter McCoil

The Los Angeles Chargers announced that they have promoted RB Andre Williams from their practice squad to the active roster and waived S Dexter McCoil to make room for him.

Williams, 24, is a former fourth-round pick by the Giants of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was in the third year a four-year, $2,673,600 rookie contract and set to earn a base salary of $600,000 for 2016 when the Giants cut him loose coming out of the preseason.

Williams wound up being claimed off of waivers from by the Chargers but was later cut him loose before signing him to their practice squad.

He has bounced on and off the team’s practice squad and was signed to a one-year contract as an exclusive rights free agent last offseason. Los Angeles waived him as they trimmed their roster down to the 53-man limit and re-signed him to their practice squad.

In 2016, Williams appeared in one game and rushed for 87 yards on 18 carries (4.7 YPC) and no touchdowns.
