The San Diego Chargers haveย restructured the contract of TE Antonio Gates in recent days, according to Brian McIntyre.

San Diego has reportedly converted $3 million of Gates‘ $5 million base salary into a signing bonus that will be prorated over the remainder of the contract.

This in turn frees up $1.5 million in available cap space for the Chargers.

Gates, 34, is in the fifth year of hisย six-year, $39.8 million contractย that includesย $20.4 million guaranteed. He has a base salary ofย $5.9 million coming his way in 2016, assuming that changes weren’t also made to this figure as well.

It’s worth mentioning thatย Gates is listed as questionable for tonightย opener against the Cardinals due to aย hamstring injury.
