Cowboys DT David Irving Suspended Indefinitely For Substance Abuse Violation

Tom Pelissero reports that Cowboys DT David Irving has been suspended indefinitely for violating the Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Earlier in the week, Adam Schefter mentioned that Irving was under evaluation from the NFL for a potential suspension.

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News previously reported that the Cowboys have “no intention” of re-signing Irving, who is in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Last year, Irving dealt with a high-ankle sprain after serving a suspension to open the season for a violation of the NFL’s drug policy.

Irving, 25, originally signed on with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa State back in 2015. He was waived at the start of the regular season and later added to the Chiefs’ practice squad.

The Cowboys signed him to their active roster just a few weeks into the 2015 season and brought him back on a one-year, $615,000 exclusive rights contract in 2017. Dallas used a second-round restricted tender on Irving during last year, which will cost them $2.914 million for the 2018 season.

Irving is in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

In 2018, Irving appeared in two games for the Cowboys and recorded four tackles and a sack.

We have him featured in our Top 100 – 2019 NFL Free Agents list.
