Cowboys Have “Real” Interest In Urban Meyer

According to Albert Breer of SI.com, the Cowboys interest in former Ohio State HC Urban Meyer is “real” and he believes the feeling is mutual from Meyer’s end.

Breer doesn’t think Meyer is dying to get back to coaching right now, but he plans to listen to offers from NFL teams if they come calling.

For Meyer to return to coaching and take an NFL job, Breer says it would likely have to be a “flagship franchise” and a place where he can win quickly because of his age and prior health issues. Breer mentions Dallas checks both of these boxes and already have an established relationship with him.

Breer does caution that he isn’t saying this is likely to happen, but adds that “it’s certainly possible.”

Last week, Jane Slater of NFL Media reported that the Cowboys have “very real interest” in possibly hiring Meyer and added that Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones spoke with Meyer recently.

Oklahoma HC Lincoln Riley reportedly remains a “strong candidate” for the job and another name to keep an eye on, per Slater, is Clemson OC Tony Elliott.

The Cowboys still plan for Jason Garrett to finish out the season as their head coach, even though they’ve put together very disappointing performances the past two weeks.

Many believe Garrett will need to win the Super Bowl or at least get there to keep his job, but the overall expectation is that the Cowboys will be in the market for a new head coach next month.

A few months ago, Meyer appeared on The Herd With Colin Cowherd and was asked about Riley possibly joining the Cowboys and said he’d have interest in the job.

“Pure speculation, because I know [Riley], but I don’t know him like that, but that’s the one [job],” Meyer said. “That’s the New York Yankees, that’s the Dallas Cowboys, that’s the one. Great city, you got Dak Prescott, you got Zeke Elliott, you got a loaded team, and I can’t speak for [Riley] obviously—I hate to even speculate—because I don’t know him, that’s really not fair, but to me, that’s the one job in professional football that you kind of say, ‘I gotta go do that.'”

Cowherd asked Meyer if he would be interested in talking with the Cowboys.

“Absolutely. Absolutely,” Meyer said. “That one? Yes.

We’ll have more regarding Meyer and the Cowboys as the news is available.
