Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch Undergoing Neck Surgery, Full Recovery Expected

Jane Slater reports that Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch will undergo a “minimally invasive” surgery next month to repair a nerve issue in his neck that cut short his season.

While this will end his 2019 season, Slater mentions that Vander Esch should be back well in advance of training camp next year.

Vander Esch has been sidelined for a month with a neck injury, but it appears as though this isn’t a major concern for him moving forward.

Vander Esch, 23, is a former first-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2018. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $11.8 million contract that included a $6.7 million signing bonus.

The Cowboys will have a fifth-year option to pick up on Vander Esch for the 2022 season.

In 2019, Vander Esch appeared in nine games for the Cowboys and recorded 72 tackles, a half sack, a forced fumble and three pass defenses.
