DeForest Buckner Expects To Open Extension Talks With 49ers After Season

49ers DL DeForest Buckner says his agent, Joel Segal, plans to meet with the team after this season to discuss a possible long-term extension.

“I talked to my agent in the past couple weeks (and) he’s going to come out in the offseason and we’re going to talk a little more,” Buckner said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “Right now, that’s something that I don’t know and we’re going to figure (it) out during the offseason.”

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said earlier in the week that Buckner is “someone we want to be a Niner for a long time.

“We’ll look into all of that stuff,” Shanahan said. “I haven’t thought about any of that now, but I know DeFo is someone we want to be a Niner for a long time.”

Buckner, 24, is a former first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2016. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $18.19 million contract and set to make a base salary of $2.93 million for the 2019 season.

The 49ers will have to decide whether to pick up Buckner’s fifth-year option next April.

In 2018, Buckner has appeared in 14 games for the 49ers and recorded 60 tackles, 11 sacks and two pass defenses.
