Doctors Wanted Lions RB Jahvid Best To Wait A Year Before Returning To Football

Dave Birkett of theย Detroit Free Pressย writes that the Lions decision to place RBย Jahvid Best on theย reserve/PUP Monday had more to do with the recommendation of their doctors, than his current health.

โ€œThatโ€™s within the range of where the doctors wanted him to be, so it made it an easy decision โ€” or an easier decision. Itโ€™s not an easy decision, but it made it an easier decision,โ€ Schwartz said. โ€œBut weโ€™ll just wait and see. Like I keep saying, heโ€™s looked extremely good in all his physical stuff and as soon as we can get him back and get clearance we will.โ€

Best will miss the first six weeks of the season, so the Lions will have to get what they can from Kevin Smith and second-year RB Mikel Leshoure. Last year, Best looked spectacular before he suffered another serious concussion. This is really a tough situation for the team, considering that Best is such a weapon, but comes with a very concerning history of concussions.
