Dolphins Have Told Reshad Jones They Won’t Trade Him This Year

Dolphins S Reshad Jones has reportedly been on the trade block form months. However, Jones tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that the team has informed him that they will not trade him.

“They said I won’t be traded this year,” Jones said.

Jones’ contract was likely prohibitive anyway and would have impacted the kind of return Miami could get for him.

The Dolphins are expected to scale back Jones’ role in their defense this year.

Whatever my role is I am willing to take on and be the best I can,” Jones said. “I can play free safety, I can play strong safety. New coaching, new staff, new system, that’s part of it.

“I still have Pro Bowl caliber in me, a lot of good football in me that I can play. I’m just trying to be the best player I can be. I’m focusing on doing everything I can to help this team.”

Jones, 31, is a former fifth-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2010. He was in the final year of his five-year, $30.81 million contract when the Dolphins signed him to a five-year, $60 million extension that includes $35 million guaranteed in 2017.

Jones stands to make a base salary of $13.01 million for the 2019 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Jones would free up $5,025,000 of available cap space while creating $12,135,000 in dead money.

In 2018, Jones appeared in 14 games for the Dolphins and recorded 72 tackles, three interceptions, one defensive touchdown and nine pass defenses.
