Bills HC Doug Marrone: Jeff Tuel Likely to Start at QB Week 1

Tim Graham of the Buffalo News tweeted Monday afternoon that new Bills head coach Doug Marrone says the plan is for undrafted ex-Washington State QB Jeff Tuel to get the Week 1 start against the Patriots.

While Kevin Kolb battles what could be a career-ending concussion and EJ Manuel’s knee isn’t up to par, the Bills might have to rely on a third string kid to buy them some time until Manuel is healthy enough to play.

Marrone also added he hopes Manuel will be ready in time for the regular season, but the team is “planning” on Tuel to get the start.

In an interview with BuffaloBills.com, Tuel was asked days ago what he thought the chances are he could be the guy.

“Just to be ready when my number was called. I didn’t know when that was going to be. [Offensive Coordinator] Coach Nathaniel Hackett doesn’t really tell us, but just to make sure we are ready. Just to be ready to go in whenever.”

For Tuel, “whenever” could be September 8th.
