Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that several league executives around the NFL believe Texans QB Deshaun Watson will be next in line to sign a “mega-extension.”
According to Fowler, Watson could have a deal in place with Houston before Patrick Mahomes agrees to a record deal with the Chiefs. Fowler says Mahomes “is considered in his own stratosphere.”
Prior reports have said Mahomes could end up being the first player to make $40 million per year once his extension with Kansas City is finalized, so it will be interesting to hear what numbers are being considered for Watson.
The Texans locked up LT Laremy Tunsil to a record contract for offensive linemen last month by a substantial margin and it sounds like they could do the same with Watson.
Watson, 24, was taken in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Texans. He signed a four-year, $13.854 million with the Texans and will make a base salary of $1.17 million for the 2020 season.
Houston picked up Watson’s fifth-year option a few weeks ago worth around $17.3 million for the 2021 season.
In 2019, Watson appeared in 15 games for the Texans and completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,852 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 413 yards and seven touchdowns.
Weโll have more regarding the Texans and Watson as the news is available.
