Falcons DE Takkarist McKinley announced via his Twitter account that his fifth-year option for the 2021 season is being declined.

The Falcons confirmed the news and issued the following statement:

“We have decided to not move forward with a fifth-year option for Takk, and at this time are taking a wait-and-see approach in terms of future contracts. Takk has shown the ability to produce at a high level, and we look forward to his production in 2020.”

The fifth-year option was guaranteed for injury only and wouldn’t have prevented the two parties from negotiating an extension.

McKinley, 24, is a former first-round pick by the Falcons out of UCLA in the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $10.2 million rookie contract and is set to make a base salary of $1.85 million for the 2020 season.

McKinley finished last year on the injured reserve list due to a shoulder injury. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent in 2021.

In 2019, McKinley appeared in 14 games for the Falcons and recorded 29 total tackles and 3.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 54 overall edge rusher out of 107 qualifying players.
