Falcons Looking To Upgrade Backup QB Position?

Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN has heard that the Falcons coaching staff would like to upgrade their backup quarterbacks position.

According to Russini, there’s some question as to whether or not T.J. Yates is really the Falcons preferred option as Matt Ryan‘s backup.

Russini wonders if the Falcons could have interest in Redskins backup QB Kirk Cousins, given that OC Kyle Shanahan worked with him a few years ago and has been a big supporter of Cousins in the past.

It’s worth mentioning that Atlanta also has Sean Renfree on their roster right now.

The free agent quarterback market is very limited right now with Michael Vick being the best available option. Other quarterback options include: Tyler Thigpen, Matt Flynn, John Skelton, Rex Grossman, and Caleb Hanie.

Yates, 28, is a former fifth-round pick of the Texans back in 2011. He spent three years in Houston before he was dealt to the Falcons in return for ILB Akeem Dent.

The Falcons elected to bring him back on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million this past March.

Last year, Yates wound up appearing in just one game for the Falcons last year and threw for 64 yards and an interception.
