According to Jason La Canfora, former Panthers HC Ron Rivera is expected to be in high demand as a head coaching candidate this cycle and could have his pick of available jobs.
La Canfora adds Rivera’s dismissal won’t be held against him, as Carolina was always likely to shake things up at the end of the season. He says Rivera’s resume, leadership, personality and communication skills will make him a hit with general managers.
La Canfora notes that the two dream positions for Rivera would be the Chargers, where he was a defensive coordinator for several seasons, or the Bears, where he both played and coached. However, there’s a good chance neither job is open this offseason.
La Canfora also mentions the Giants, where Rivera would have familiarity with GM Dave Gettleman, and the Falcons, who could be looking for an experienced head coach to stave off a rebuild, as potential landing spots.
The Cowboys could also be a possibility according to some league sources, per La Canfora.
Rivera, 57, has spent the past nine years as the Panthers head coach and has led them to a record of 76-63-1, which includes four playoff appearances and a trip to the Super Bowl following the 2015 season. He has been named the AP coach of the year twice.
We’ll have more on Rivera as the news is available.
