Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Vikings OC Pat Shurmur will meet with the Giants as the “soonest possible time” to finalize a deal to become their next head coach.
As of now, a press conference has yet to be announced, but Rapoport says that he’ll be the Giants’ next head coach.
A source tells ESPN’s Jordan Raanan that the expectation is that a deal with the Giants could be done by Tuesday.
The Vikings were officially eliminated from contention on Sunday by losing 38-7 to the Eagles, so Shurmur is available to take the Giants job in the coming days.
Shurmur, 52, began his NFL coaching career with the Eagles in 1999 as their tight ends and offensive line coach. He was promoted to QBs coach before departing to become the offensive coordinator of the Rams in 2009.
Mike Holmgren hired Shurmur as the Browns head coach a few years later but he lasted just two seasons in Cleveland. After a few years with the Eagles, the Vikings hired him as their tight ends coach in 2016 and he worked his way up to offensive coordinator.
We’ll have more regarding Shurmur and the Giants as the news is available.
