Giants Retaining GM Dave Gettleman

According to Mike Garafolo, the Giants will be retaining GM Dave Gettleman going forward.

The team confirmed the news in a press release announcing the firing of HC Pat Shurmur.

“Dave Gettleman is our general manager in 2020 and hopefully for many years after that,” Giants co-owner John Mara said. “We believe he is the right person to lead us going forward. Dave has a long record of success. We think he’s capable of putting a great team together and he’s going to get that opportunity. To the extent we need to make changes in personnel or the way we do things, we’re going to discuss that.”

After the team fired Shurmur, there had been some speculation the Giants would go ahead and clean house and fire Gettleman as well. Gettleman’s record as general manager is just 9-23 despite publicly insisting the Giants are ready to compete.

However, it appears Gettleman will have at least one more season to try and make it work with a new head coach.

Gettleman has radically remade the Giants roster in his two seasons with the team, trading a number of prominent players like WR Odell Beckham and drafting QB Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall this past April to replace longtime franchise starter Eli Manning

Gettleman, 68, began his executive career with the Giants pro personnel director back in 1999. He eventually worked his way up to senior pro personnel analyst before departing to become the Panthers GM in 2013.

Carolina surprisingly made the decision to fire Gettleman during the summer of 2017 just a year and a half after the Panthers played in the Super Bowl. He agreed to join the Giants as general manager at the end of the year.

During his four years with the Panthers, the team posted a record of 40-23-1, including three playoff appearances and one trip to the Super Bowl.
