Jaguars Releasing Veteran TE Marcedes Lewis

Mark Long is reporting that the Jaguars are releasing veteran TE Marcedes Lewis on Tuesday.

Lewis tells Long that he feels disrespected by the way this went down: “I think I deserved a little better than I got. … I wish they would have done it sooner.

The Jaguars are also releasing WR Allen Hurns today, so there will be some changes to Jacksonville’s offense for the 2018 season.

The decision to sign Austin Seferian-Jenkins in free agency clearly impacted Lewis’ status with the Jaguars, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him catch on with a new team in the coming weeks.

Lewis, 33, is a former first-round pick of the Jaguars back in 2006. He has played all 12 years of his NFL career with the Jaguars.

Lewis is in the final year three-year, $12 million contract that included $5 million guaranteed and was set to make a base salary of $3.5 million for the 2018 season when the Jaguars picked up his $250,000 this past February.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Lewis will free up $3.5 million of available cap space while creating $250,000 in dead money.

In 2017, Lewis appeared in all 16 games for the Jaguars and caught 24 passes for 318 yards receiving and five touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 9 tight end out of 71 qualifying players.
